Grade 5 - Ms. Williamson

In Math, we continued working on the division word problems from  yesterday , including going over the first one together.  In Language Arts we finished reading the first chapter of  The Incredible Journey  together and shared our descriptive paragraphs about food. We also wrote paragraphs that began with: "I was heading back to the place I thought I'd never see again." In Social Studies we continued working on our comic strips about the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands region of Canada. For Science, students finished their previous electromagnet research and began working on finding information for a specific technology. They'll be presenting a poster on this chosen technology in pairs, sometime next week.  A reminder that tomorrow is our field trip to the Glenbow Museum in connection to our Social Studies work around Canada's First Nations. This morning, we started Math by reviewing some of the problems from last week's check in. Anyone with continuing questions on division strategies is encouraged to see Ms. Williamson, Mr. Risdon, or Ms. Swinton for help and continue practicing at home. In French, we reviewed the verbs Etre and Avoir. Students had their final class period to describe their chosen farm animals. In LA, we started with the prompt: "I was awoken by a tapping sound outside my window." Students also had time to finish their group paragraphs and will be sharing these tomorrow. This afternoon, students had time for unfinished work. In Social, we reviewed our jot notes about the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands region and students began working on a comic strip to show their knowledge of the region (needs to include: one major city, one river, one great lake, and two landforms/landmarks). We had a very fun Friday! We started off with Compliments, Concerns, and Circle. The Calgary Opera presented "The Bremen Town Musicians" during our assembly. After a quick, windy break outside, we enjoyed our positive choices reward by watching Disney's Robin Hood. We ended the day with some QR/WOW time. **Please return signed field trip forms ASAP! In Math, students wrote their division check-in.  Most students now seem to have a division strategy that is working for them, but for those who don't, this would be a good thing to work on at home (that we will also spend some more time on at school). Reading and understanding word problems also continues to be an area that students will practice and be supported in.  In French, we learned the verb Avoir (to have), as well as some animal body parts (link is here ). In LA, students started with another writing prompt: "Today, I learned I could fly." They compared the paragraphs they'd found in texts from home that show a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. This afternoon, students had time to work on unfinished work. This morning in Health, we discussed the coronavirus to dispel some myths and (hopefully) relieve some stress around it. We referenced an NPR article (found here ) and the infographic below. This morning, students worked on some word problems for division. We will have a check-in on 3digit by 1 digit division on Thursday. Mr. Risdon will be providing a study guide. In French, we continued working on the verb Etre and using it to describe "les animaux." In LA, students worked in groups to create a paragraph about food; each student in the group was responsible for one sentence of the paragraph and needed to use at least 3 of the five senses. This afternoon, students had time to work on unfinished work. In Science, we worked on circuit drawing using symbols. Students also had more time to finish their resistor experiments and their safety rules. We ended the day with jot notes in Social on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands region. In Math today, we continued working on division. We watched a video about how base 10 blocks can show the process for division ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mhbMLV0-yE ) and Mr. Risdon showed us how repeated subtraction can also help us divide. In French, we learned the verb Etre. You can watch the video here . This will help us describe animals, as well as other things and places. In Language Arts, students were introduced to/reminded of the Hamburger method of paragraph writing. They had the opportunity to plan out a paragraph on a topic of their choice, with 3 supporting details. After lunch, students had time to work on unfinished work. In Art, Ms. Swinton led us through a collaborative exercise, where students began creating their vision and then had to pass their paper on to several classmates before getting it back.
