Thursday 1/30/20

This morning we had our check-in for basic facts (multiplication and division), multiplying by 10, estimating to find products, and using mental math to multiply. Students are strongly encouraged to regularly review their basic facts and all strategies practiced in class. In French, we started our Fashion Show assignment. Students will be describing clothing in small groups and we will present next Thursday (February 6).  We had a good Circle and compliment circle today. We also continued yesterday's Bell Let's Talk discussion by creating "talk bubbles" to share how each of us will contribute to positive change. We ended the day with Snack & Chat with all four grade five classes. Wednesday 1/29/20

This morning, students worked in groups to correct their math worksheets. They had time for unfinished work and we continued reading Chapter 13 of The Boundless. We started a visual dictionary for important electricity and magnetism vocabulary. This afternoon, they had their final (double) class period to finish their Canadian Shield jot notes. We ended the day with a discussion about Bell Let's Talk Day. We had some great discussion about mental health, supporting one another, and resources accessible for anyone who is struggling (including Kids Help Phone). We encouraged our students to continue this conversation at home tonight with their families and we will talk more about it tomorrow. This morning in Math, we reviewed the three strategies for mental math multiplication: splitting up one of the factors (18 x 9 = (10x9) + (8x9) = 162); halving and doubling (splitting one factor in half and doubling the other); and compatible numbers with compensation (19 x 6 = (20x6) - (1x6) = 114). Students continued working on the practice questions in the textbook (90-91: #1, 3, 5, 7, 10-13). In French, students had more time to work on their "Les Vetements pour 4 Saisons" visual journal page. For Social, students continued their jot notes on the Canadian Shield region. This afternoon, we had a presentation on electricity from Inside Education/Enmax. We started Chapter 13 of The Boundless. This morning in Math, we worked on different strategies to use mental math for multiplication. We talked about breaking up the factors (13 x 5 = 10x5 + 3x5), halving and doubling (16 x 25 = 8 x 50), and compatible numbers with compensation (19 x 6 = 20x6 - 1x6). We will continue working with these strategies and practice questions tomorrow. In French, students had time to work on their 4 Seasons Clothing (Les Vetements pour 4 Saisons) VJ page. They will have one more class period and then it goes onto the Work on Work list. We finished Chapter 12 of The Boundless and students had time to work on their storyboard. This afternoon, students had time to work on unfinished work and we voted on our reward - computer time. We will find a time soon to book this. We ended the day with more time to work on our mug art. We started with Compliment Circle this morning. Students started their "Vetements pour 4 Saisons." We will continue this on Monday. Students had time to work on their Mug art and we will also continue that next week. We read more of Chapter 12 of The Boundless. Students began making jot notes on the Canadian Shield region and had some time to finish unfinished work. We ended the day with a school-wide math activity. Students will be participating in a Snack and Chat next Thursday (January 30) with the other Grade 5 classes. The instruction form went home today. This is meant as an opportunity to share books they've read and discuss their reading. Decade Writing Instructions - 2010 Decade: Pick one or two important life events. This morning, students had time to review their Math textbook questions in small groups. In Science, we discussed which parts of a batter and bulb need to be connected to form a complete circuit. Students had time, both before and after lunch, to finish their scripts, practice, and film their Interior Plains news casts. We also read part of Chapter 12 of The Boundless. Today was the Science Fair and the students involved spent the day explaining their amazing projects! Very well done! We had a small class today as a result. Students had time to finish their Math assignments from the week. We will be marking the textbook pages tomorrow, so please make sure they're finished. In French, students played Quizlet Live to work on their French vocabulary. Students who missed last Wednesday's quiz will make it up on Friday - please study from your class notes. In LA, we worked on Wacky Web Tales (group mad libs). This afternoon, students had time to finish unfinished work and visit the Science Fair. We ended the day with Social. We are filming tomorrow, so please practice your scripts tonight! This morning, we worked on estimating products to solve problems. Students (who aren't in Science Fair) will have time to finish this up, as well as other assignments in Math. In French, we reviewed clothing vocabulary and started to introduce the next assignment: Les Vetements pour les 4 Saisons. We will work on this next class. In Language Arts, students had time to finish their descriptive writing from yesterday. This afternoon, we had time for unfinished work. In Science, students worked with batteries, bulbs, and wires to find different ways to complete a circuit. We will continue this discussion next class. This morning we started with Circle and DEAR. In Math, we worked on multiplying by 10 and multiples of 10. Remember that when we multiply by a multiple of 10, we add all the zeros from the question into the answer! In LA, students worked on descriptive writing from a picture prompt. We will finish this tomorrow. After lunch, students had time to work on unfinished work. In Social, students worked on writing their scripts, making props, and practicing for their newscast. We have technology booked to start recording on Thursday, so students are encouraged to practice their parts at home. We ended the day with Chapter 11 of The Boundless. Science Fair Reminders: The science fair is this Wednesday, January 22. For students to participate, they need to have their finished trifold, logbook, and any other project components in the Hawksnest   before  the 9:08 bell on Wednesday morning. This morning, we started with Circle. In Art, we worked on some Mug pop art - pictured here . Students had time for DEAR, a snack break, Phys Ed, and we finished reading Chapter 10 of The Boundless. This morning we started with number sentences and then students had time to finish their practice questions from yesterday and Monday. In French, we had our check in for "les vetements." Students are encouraged to be regularly reviewing their vocabulary. In LA, we worked on our January Quote writing. The quote can be found in a previous blog post. This afternoon, students had time for unfinished work. In Social, students had their final class period for their jot notes and we introduced the task for this region: a news cast. Students will be writing a script, working in groups of 1-4 people. We read the end of Chapter 9 of The Boundless and students had time to fill in their storyboard. Tuesday 1/14/20

This morning in Health, we discussed how NOT to get sick, especially during this peak cold and flu season. We discussed hand washing, healthy eating, getting enough exercise and good sleeping habits in particular. In Math, we continued with strategies for multiplication and division, with a focus on doubling and halving to help us solve problems. Students will have more time tomorrow for the practice questions. In LA, students had time to finish their decade writing and their 2020 goals. This afternoon, students had time to work on unfinished work. In Science, we talked about electrons and static electricity. Monday 1/13/20

This morning we started with number sentences and strategies for solving basic facts questions. We discussed the 7 times tables specifically and encouraged students to choose this set for memorization, as there is no handy trick. Students worked on some practice questions. In French, we continued working on clothing vocabulary. Students described their own outfits and worked on a "Mot Mystere" to practice their vocabulary. We will have a check-in on Wednesday, so students are encouraged to practice their vocabulary tonight and tomorrow. Students had more time to work on their Decade Writing in LA. This afternoon, students had time to work on unfinished work. We continued working on our Interior Plains notes. We ended the day by reading some of Chapter 9 of The Boundless. This morning, we started with Circle. In Math, we worked through the 4 and 8 times tables. Students had their choice of mazes or games to practice. This morning, we started with some goal setting in Health. Students reflected on different areas for self-improvement in 2020. In Math, we started working on basic multiplication facts, with a focus on 2, 5, 9, and 10. Students are strongly encouraged to be practicing their basic multiplication facts and their corresponding division facts on a regular basis. In LA, students had time to start their planning for their Decade Writing assignment. After lunch, they had time to work on unfinished work. In Social, we reviewed and compared the Cordillera and Arctic regions. We also started working on the Interior Plains region. We ended the day by starting Chapter 8 of The Boundless. Welcome back! We started the day with a new seating/desk arrangement and circle time to share about our holidays. In Math, we played a game of SNAKE to practice multiplication. In French, we started our new unit: Les vetements (clothing). In LA, we discussed our upcoming writing assignment: Decade Writing. Students will be reflecting on what has happened and make predictions on what will be coming up in their lives. In Social, students had time to work on their Arctic region posters. We read the rest of Chapter 7 of The Boundless.
